.Hotrod- Initially, the trailer made me say no. But about ten minutes in the movies I was laughing yes. Andy Samberg and a great cast filled with sweet chemistry and talented physical humor, this movie does for Andy what Anchorman did for Will Ferrell.
.Harold- This movie probably flew under the radar but it flew into my heart. Interestingly enough, the movie sells a gimmick. What if a thirteen year old boy was prematurely bald and had the attitude and hobbies of a 54 year old. This movie was funny, and smart, sometime a bit over the top and silly, but in all the right ways.
.The Savages- Yes, I'm one of those people who likes depressing movies. Well, depressing movies that feel real. This movie is brutally real. If you're looking for a smart movie for a rainy day, this is it.
.Darjeeling Limited- Wes Anderson directs a movie about three brothers, Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman, who go on a spiritual journey to India after the death of their father, ultimately, all having their own movies. This movie asks three questions, can family members become friends, whats really in important in life, and did he kill the cobra?
.Lars and the Real Girl-This movie is sometimes painful but unique and beautiful. Ryan Gosling(Could be the green lantern?) plays Lars, a depressed, anti-social, but most importantly kind guy who after losing his mother, retreats from others. That is until he buys a sex doll, whom he believes to be a mail in bride and missionary. What makes this movie work is that while most people initially are disturbed by the idea, they realise, its not evil. The town grows to accept the doll, as Lars grows to accept the finality of death. Another good rainy day movie.
.Paprika- If you liked the anime-series Paranoia Agent or Ghost in the Shell, or just like beautiful art and metaphor, this movie is a master peice. This movie is one of the most aestetically pleasing films I've seen in years and the characters that are involved in this mystery of the ghost in the machine asks serious questions but most importantly, teaches us that our desires define us, not our bodies. For better, or worse, this is my favorite anime movie of the year, and probably my second favorite anime movie after Princess Mononoke.
.Son of Rambow-This movie is probably the most heart warming film on the list. Its the tale of two boys who become friends and in the end, through making a movie, overcome their problems whether its an abusive relationship with an older brother or a perverse religion opressing your family. This movie is quirky, and thats a good thing.
.Death at a Funeral-As British comedy, as British comedies can be. Some dry humor, mixed with some irony and a dash of old people and you get this funnny comedy of errors. Check it out.
Thanks and please tell me if these synopsis are too long, I'll try and summarise them better in the future.
